Benefits of Boxing

I recently FINALLY got a classpass membership. I don’t know why it took me this long to get on the classpass bandwagon, but I’m glad I finally did. I took a boxing class yesterday and enjoyed the experience. I had to buy boxing gloves and wrapping tape at the front desk, but then I felt like such a legit warrior after wrapping my tape on my knuckles. The class was mostly free-style with some demonstrations and sparring, which was fine with me, I mostly needed the boxing for stress relief. There are so many benefits to boxing, which I wanted to stipulate here.

  1. Cardiovascular health — Boxing is a cardio workout first and foremost and helps improving heart health and increases endurance.

  2. Strength and muscle tone — It also builds upper body strength and tones the arm muscles.

  3. Weight loss — All the sweating that comes with boxing leads to weight loss and can move a ton of calories because of its high intensity workout.

  4. Improved coordination and balance — I had to maintain balance with my leg stance and keep moving throughout the workout while punching the bag. This increases coordination as well as keeping light on the toes.

  5. Enhanced reflexes — Sparring improved my reflex time because I had to react quickly. The fast paced jabbing and crossing improves your speed and reflexes.

  6. Stress relief — It releases so much pent up stress! I felt so good after the class, like fear and anxiety dissipated from my body.

  7. Confidence and self esteem — I’ve had poor self image for a really long time, almost all of my life, which led to eating disorders and mental health issues. I’m hoping to gain more self esteem and confidence through boxing as well as my other workout classes.

  8. Discipline and focus — I love how it increases your focus and concentration. It improves your mental discipline, which is something I really need.

  9. Mental toughness — The image of a tough boxer in the ring doesn’t disappoint. Boxing increases your mental toughness and resilience, and grants you the ability to get over hardships and obstacles in your life. It builds grit and makes you stronger like a soldier.

  10. Self-defense - Lastly, of course, it helps with self defense! You never know when you might need self defense in an given situation, so boxing helps me be prepared.

I highly encourage everyone to try out boxing at least once, especially if you have a Classpass membership! Classpass is only $59/month for 28 credits, a total steal. I had a Pilates membership that was WAY more expensive than that, but I finally got frugal and fiscally wise enough to cancel my Pilates membership and go for Classpass. Finally.
