Christian Journaling — A Sacred Practice for Spiritual Growth, Healing, and Hearing God
I’ve been journaling since I was a kid, loving the practice of writing thoughts and revelations, whimsies and feelings down on paper. It helped me to regulate my emotions better, calming me in the midst of a storm and revealing to me my inner demons and insecurities. Slowing down and spending time by myself to process life and my days allowed me space between the world and me.
Recently, I started the practice of Christian journaling. I write my prayers down on my digital journal, asking God questions about my life that I couldn’t verbalize aloud and stilling myself to allow space to hear Him in my thoughts. Letting the Holy Spirit guide me in my meditations, I prayed to God and wrote down HIs answers to my prayers.
Christian journaling is the practice of writing with God — recording your prayers, reflections, struggles, blessings, and questions in His presence. It is a written dialogue with the Lord, guided by the Holy Spirit. It includes prayers, Scripture reflections, gratitude lists, confessions, spiritual insights, testimonies of God’s work, emotional processing, and dreams and goals with God’s guidance.
Christian journaling is powerful because it helps you to hear God more clearly. When you slow dow and reflect, the Holy Spirit brings clarity, conviction, and comfort. Journaling allows you to capture those whispers from God before the world drowns His voice out with its noise. It also strengthens your faith. Looking back at old journal entries can be comforting as you see God’s provision, mercy, and answered prayers and blessings written across the pages of your life. Journaling brings emotional healing, giving you a safe space to process pain, grief, anxiety, and trauma with Jesus — the One who restores the brokenhearted. Writing through Scripture verses helps you to internalize them, meditate on them, and apply them to your daily walk with God. Documenting blessings changes your perspective and shifts your heart towards joy and peace.
